Did you know that electronic cigarettes and vaping is illegal in Dubai and are banned in the UAE? And you thought you had it bad. They are even banned to the extent that any kind of vaping gear that is brought into the country is immediately seized at the airport. Now you might say “Well, they can always buy it online.” Not so fast Batman, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), believe it or not, actually blocks access to websites and pages that contain substances that fall within prohibited categories, and yes, vaping is on that list.
They state that the reason vaping is banned, is that the UAE supports the World Health Organization’s (WHO) stance which does not endorse e-cigarettes as it feels there is no conclusive medical research to prove that vaping, which was introduced in 2006, does not have a harmful impact on health.
Is it me or is there an ignorance virus going around? Because of course in Dubai one can still smoke, but VAPING??? Please… Get serious! It may have a “harmful impact” on one’s health!
Maybe they missed the report by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) that stated “Large-scale substitution of e-cigarettes, or other non-tobacco nicotine products, for tobacco smoking has the potential to prevent almost all the harm from smoking in society,” and that “Promoting e-cigarettes… and other non-tobacco nicotine products as widely as possible, as a substitute for smoking, is therefore likely to generate significant health gains.”
Of course the FDA had no problem turning a blind eye to it, why? - Because it didn’t support its agenda of appeasing the tobacco and pharmaceutical lobbyists in Washington. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s a lot of money to be made off of sick people.
Now the FDA right here in the good old USA has not banned vaping altogether, but they have in effect banned product improvements. The ban even applies to minor changes. According to The American Vaping Association, “any variation of the nicotine level, bottle size, flavor amount, ingredient type, etc. in a current product (i.e., one being marketed on August 8, 2016) will result in a “new” product that will be illegal to sell without preapproval from the FDA.” Definition = Not Till We Get Paid.
So in essence, for the next two years, the vaping industry is at a standstill, and the loss of competition and innovation along with product stagnation will only grow worse over time as the deadline for getting FDA approval draws near. It’s insane to think that a company’s hands are tied from making any improvements to their product designs, improvements that would make them more appealing, safer to use and more cost-effective for the consumer. When you add it all up, it simply means encouraging smokers to make a switch that could save their lives. Unfortunately, the FDA simply doesn’t care; it’s just a necessary statistic.
In the meantime we will all be subject to an aggressive smear campaign that will look like vaping is running for political office. You’ll hear about the unknown dangers of e-cigarettes, how they are enticing young people to smoke, how they don’t really help smokers stop smoking and that they could potentially cause cancer. Then in time as vaping companies fade away, what’s left of the industry will be absorbed by Big Tobacco companies and all will be “right with the world”. Mission accomplished.
